Awards, Honors and Recognitions at ELPS in 2005-2006 Faculty Dr. Mimi Benjamin, received the outstanding Mid-Level Professional award at the 2006 NASPA conference. She was also honored as Outstanding Mid-Level Professional at the NASPA IV-East conference. Dr. Larry Ebbers, was named co-facilitator for the Statewide Community College Five-Year Strategic Planning Committee. In addition, he has been re-elected to serve a six-year term on the Board of Regents for Waldorf College.Moreover, he has been named to the Vanderbilt University Peabody College, Ed.D National Advisory Committee. He was appointed to the National Advisory Board for Community College Survey of Student Engagement. Dr. Larry Ebbers received a Distinguished Service Award at the 48th Annual Conference of the Council for the Study of Community Colleges in Long Beach, CA (April 20-22, 2006). Dr. Nancy Evans, is the Recipient of the Superior Research Medallion by the College of Education at Iowa State University. She is serving as a consultant on a University of Minnesota grant that was recently funded by the US Department of Education. She received the 2006 ACPA Voice of Inclusion Medallion at the 2006 ACPA Convention in Indianapolis, IN. Dr. Troyce Fisher and Dr. Veronica Stalker, were invited to participate in two national "leadership issue groups" convened by the Wallace Foundation focusing on "Assessing Leader Behaviors" and "Roles, Responsibilities and Authority" for school governance. Dr. Flo Hamrick, was reappointed as Editor for Journal of College Student Development for a second three-year term. She was named ISU Wakonse Fellow for dedication to teaching. She received an all expenses paid grant to attend the National Center for Education Statistics database training program in May 2006. Dr. Mary Huba, was appointed to the inaugural Editorial Review Board of a new, international, peer-reviewed e-Journal entitled the International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. Dr. Frankie Santos Laanan, received promotion and tenure as associate professor. He was invited to serve on the NASPA Advisory Board for Community and Two-Year Colleges and attended the advisory board meeting in Austin, TX on January 23-24, 2006. He received a $200,000 dissemination grant from NSF. Dr. Frankie Santos Laanan was featured in two New York Times stories about his research on community colleges and how students negotiate the college transfers. Please visit College of Human Sciences website for more information. Dr. Joanne Marshall, was elected to the Executive Board of the Religion and Education SIG at AERA. She was appointed to the Ames School District's School Improvement Advisory Committee. Dr. Barbara Licklider, was selected to receive a 2006 Regents Faculty Excellence Award given by the Board of Regents, State of Iowa. Dr. Emily Moore: was appointed to serve 2006-07 Education Administration 1 Peer Review Committee for the Fulbright Senior Specialists Program, Council for International Exchange of Scholars. She was selected as Class of 2009, Institutional Actions Council of the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association. She also received an award at the Small Victories celebration in January. Dr. Nana Osei-Kofi, was invited to serve on the local advisory board of the NWSA( National Women's Studies Association) Journal housed at ISU. She is a 2006 Future of Minority Studies-Mellon Fellow. She was selected as a participant of the 2006 National Women's Studies Association Women of Color Leadership Project. She received a foreign travel grant to travel to India from ISU's Faculty Senate Committee on Recognition and Development. Dr. Lori Patton, was received a $5000 grant from American Psychological Foundation accepting proposal, "From Margin to Center: An Exploratory Study of the Developmental Experiences of Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities." Dr. Steve Porter, received a $30,000 grant from the Association of Institutional Research to look at breadth of study in the Baccalaureate and Beyond survey. He was also appointed to the editorial board of JCSD 2006 (Journal of College Student Development). Dr. Laura Rendón, was the Rossmann Mannat Awardee, inaugural College of Human Sciences award. She was elected Secretary and Vice President Elect of the National Council for Community and Education Partnerships, Washington, DC. She received appointments: the Editorial Board of the NASPA Journal, the Cottey College National Advisory Board, Lumina Foundation Diversity Grant, the Advisory Board of the Handbook of Latinos and Education, and the Resource Advisory group of the publication, On Campus With Women, published by the American Association of Colleges and Universities. She was selected as panelist on National Teleconference, Shattering the Barriers: Transforming the First Year of College for Students of Color, University of South Carolina. She received a $82,555 three-year grant from Michigan State Unversity/Lumina Foundation for the ASHE/Lumina Fellows Program (with Dr. Nana Osei-Kofi). Dr. James Scharff, was appointed to serve as Iowa State University on the State of Iowa Department of Education Finance Roundtable. Dr. John Schuh, was received Robert H. Shaffer Award for Excellence as a Graduate Faculty Member at the 2006 NASPA conference. He was also honored with the Outstanding contribution to Student Affairs through Teaching award by NASPA IV-E conference. Whalen, of the "Betty Harrah Manuscript of the Year" award for the Journal of College and University Student Housing, presented at the Association of College and University Housing Officers-International annual conference, in Milwaukee, WI, July, 2005.
Doctoral Students Nina Grant, was selected to be recognized as faculty-staff change agent of the year during ISU's Office of Multicultural Student Affairs celebrations banguet for students of color. She was named by students as staff member who has been of significant help, ISU Student Scholors & Leaders Recognition Ceremony, April 2, 2006 She was elected to the AMEA (Association of MultiEthnic Americans) Board of Directors in January 2006. She was also recognized as one member of a five-member team of the College of Agriculture Team Award for significant contribution to the missions of research, extension or teaching in the College of Agriculture at Iowa State University Interdisciplinary and/or interdepartmental efforts. Juan Guardia, received a plaque of appreciation and gratitude for serving as Director of the NASPA Minority Undergraduate Fellows Program Summer Leadership Institute in 2004 & 2005 presented at the 2006 NASPA annual conference. He was inducted into Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. Karlene Noel Jennings, was selected as co-editor for Association of Research Libraries 'SPEC monograph on Library Fundraising. Robyn Johnson, a Educational Leadership-Higher Education doctoral, received Research Excellence Award for Dissertation; Academic Excellence Award from LGBT Student Services. Becky Pitkin, was a recipient of the Scottish Rite Fellowship which will assist with her doctoral studies. Lisa Stock, was inducted into Phi Kappa Honor Society. Lyn Brodersen Wells, was inducted into Phi Kappa Honor Society.
Masters Students Leah Behrens, received the YWCA Award for empowering women and eliminating racism. She was inducted into Phi Kappa Honor Society. Phil Hernandez, was the third place winner in the MMOGSISP case study competition and received his conference registration covered as a prize. In addition, he also presented at the conference. He was voted "Senator of the Year" by the ISU Government of the Study Body. Terry Kruse, was inducted into Phi Kappa Honor Society. Sara Olsen: a HgEd-Student Affairs masters received the 2nd place in the case study competition at Midwest Meeting of Graduate Students in Student Personnel. She was named an ISPA Scholar ( Iowa Student Personnel Association). Ellen Semran, received the LGBTSS Small Victories Award for Academic Excellence. Emily Wilcox, supervised the WISE learning community, which will be awarded the Outstanding Innovations Award at the Learning Communities Institute in May, 2006. Michael Brown, won a case study competition at ACPA 2006. Marcia Purdy, received the W. Houston Dougharty Ally Award from ISU's Office of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Student Services. Damon Holland, received the Bath Fellowship, which will assist with his master's dissertation.
