Leadership in Student Affairs, Community Colleges and Faculty Development
Policy Studies
- ASHE/Lumina Policy Briefs and Critical Essays . In conjunction with the Association for the Study of Higher Education, the Lumina Foundation and Michigan State University, our program publishes and disseminates a series of policy briefs and critical essays. The authors include ASHE/Lumina Fellows who complete their dissertations on policy topics such as student retention, access to college, and adult learning. Faculty involved in this project include: Laura I. Rendón and Stephen Porter.
- Education Policy and Practice Perspectives (EP3) . Our program publishes policy briefs designed to critically examine the ways educators approach changes taking place in higher education. Briefs have dealt with topics such as enrollment management, college affordability, and diversity. EP3 is guided by a graduate student editorial board, and the faculty sponsor is Laura I. Rendón .
Social Justice
Our higher education program is concerned with preparing students who will become social change agents. Faculty are leading the nation in developing a new social justice initiative. Nancy Evans , Nana Osei-Kofi , Lori Patton , and Ryan Evely Gildersleeve , along with postdoctoral research fellow, Riyad Shahjahan , have developed a social justice concentration in the doctoral program in higher education. Students will gain an in-depth understanding of the dynamics of privilege and oppression, and will also develop skills necessary to work actively for social and economic justice.
Teaching and Learning
John Schuh has conducted some of the leading research on creating engaging climates that foster student success. Nancy Evans' research on student development in college is widely employed in higher education programs throughout the nation. Laura Rendón has investigated the success of underserved students. Barbara Licklider has developed Project LEA/RN (Learning Enhancement Action/Resource Network) to expand active learning strategies.
