The Master of Education degree and the Master of Science degree require the same academic coursework as the PreLEAD Program, and with degrees leading to principal licensure. The majority of K-12 practitioners elect the M.Ed. degree. Integrated program components include a cohort model, reflective practice, intensive clinical experience, designated mentors, and a demonstration portfolio indicating mastery of the ISSL Standards.
The difference between the M.Ed. degree and the M.S. degree occurs at the end-of-program assessment. The M.Ed. degree requires a portfolio, while the M.S. degree requires a thesis or non-thesis/creative component in addition to the portfolio.
The Ph.D. with Educational Administration emphasis is designed to prepare students for leadership positions in K-12 schools or for careers in the professorate. Students are expected to have earned a master's degree and to have teaching experience in public or private elementary and/or secondary schools.
The doctoral program of study includes core coursework in educational administration indexed to the ISSL Standards, as well intensive research course requirements and six thematic seminars. Core coursework in educational administration offers three options: principal licensure, superintendent licensure, and additional advanced coursework for those who have already earned licensure. In addition, students complete an intensive Capstone Experience Project, a demonstration portfolio, and an original dissertation research study, all of which culminate in oral examinations.
Two programs are offered for those who already have earned a master's degree and wish to obtain only administrative licensure. The PreLEAD Program leads to principal licensure, and the CAS Program leads to superintendent licensure:
For principal licensure, a bachelor's degree and three years teaching experience are required. Requirements for the principal lincense are generally the same as for a master's degree. Admission to the PreLEAD Program does not imply admission to a degree program.
For superintendent licensure, a master's degree, principal licensure, and three years administrative experience are required. Admission to the CAS Program does not imply admission to the doctoral program.
