Larry Ebbers is University Professor of Higher Education in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at Iowa State University in Ames.
He received his B.S. in 1962 and M.S. in 1968, in Agriculture Education and his Ph.D. in Higher Education in 1972. All of his degrees were earned at Iowa State University. In 1992 he completed the Harvard Graduate School of Education Management Development Program. In Fall 2002 he was a visiting scholar in the University of Texas-Austin Community College Leadership Program. During 1992-93 he served as a Visiting Scholar and Professor of Education at Penn State University. He worked directly with the Center for the Study of Higher Education and with the National Center for Teaching, Learning and Assessment. In 1996-97 he was named a Miller Faculty Fellow at Iowa State University. During his fellowship he and a faculty team worked together on integrating multiculturalism into the Iowa State University curriculum.
Dr. Ebbers has held a number of positions at Iowa State University. He served as Associate Dean of the College of Education (1996-2000), as Director of RISE (1998-2000), as Department Chair of the Professional Studies Department (1985-1992), as Assistant Dean of the College of Education (1972-1985), and as Assistant Director of Residence (1965-1972). He has also taught high school in Spencer and Iowa Falls, Iowa.
He teaches courses in College Organization and Administration, Curriculum Development in Colleges, College Teaching, Comprehensive Community College, and Student Development Theory. In 1989, he initiated the Leadership Institute for a New Century (LINC program. The LINC program is designed for women and minorities preparing for community college leadership positions. In 1995 he initiated the Community College Leadership Initiative Consortium (CLIC) focused on providing leadership development for mid-and upper-level administrators in community colleges.
He is active in a number of professional organizations including the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA), Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE), the American Association of Higher Education (AAHE), American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), Phi Delta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi. During 1987-88 he served as President of NASPA. He has also served as editor of the NASPA Journal, Program Chair of the 1992 NASPA National Conference, Director of NASPA Research and Program Development and Director of the Richard Stevens Professional Development Institute, and is currently Director of the NASPA National Academy of Executive Leadership and Effectiveness. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Council for the Study of Community Colleges and as member of the American Association of Community Colleges' Commission on Research. He is also an elected member and Vice Chair of the Board of Regents of Waldorf College (IA).
Dr. Ebbers is listed in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who in American Education.In 2008 he received the NASPA Latino Network "Amigo Award" for his work with Latino Students and the Iowa State University's Outstanding Achiever Award for Professional Practice and Outreach. In 2007, he received the Thomas B. Thielen Award from the ISU Division of Student Affairs for his work with students. In 2006, he received the Distinguished Service Award from the Council for the Study Community Colleges and Affiliate of the American Association of Community Colleges. In 2005 he received the NAACP-Ames branch "Making a Difference" award for his work with students of color. In 2004, he was named University Professor. In 2001 he received the Iowa Board of Regents Award for Faculty Excellence. He was named a Fulbright Commission Scholar to Germany in 2000. In 1999 he received the Presidential Service Award from Iowa State University. In 1997, he received the Phi Kappa Phi Centennial Leadership Award from Iowa State University. In 1996 he received the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) Robert Shaffer Award for Excellence as a Graduate Faculty Member and he was inducted into the Golden Key Honor Society. In 1995 he was inducted into the Cardinal Key Leadership Honorary at Iowa State University. In 1991 he received the ISU Faculty Citation for Distinguished Service, the national NASPA Fred Turner Award for Outstanding Service to the Profession and the Iowa Student Personnel Association's Distinguished Service Award. He has also received the NASPA regional award for distinguished service in 1990, and the ISU Human Relations Award in 1987. In 1979 he was named as an Outstanding Academic Advisor by the ISU Alumni Association and one of ISU's Outstanding Young Alumni in 1977. In addition, he was a Rotary Foundation Fellow to Brazil in 1977. He has made over 300 presentations to educational groups and has published 50 articles on higher education issues. His most recent work is a co-authored book entitled "The Powerful Potential of Learning Communities."
