Biographical Statement

Nancy J. Evans is a professor in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies and coordinator of the masters program in student affairs within the higher education program at Iowa State University. She previously coordinated and taught in student affairs preparation programs at Penn State University and Western Illinois University. She also taught in the Higher Education and Student Affairs program at Indiana University. Earlier, Dr. Evans held positions in the Counseling Center at Bowling Green State University, in Residence Life and Student Activities at Stephens College, and as Assistant Dean of Students at Tarkio College.

 

Dr. Evans received the Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1978, an M.S.Ed. in Higher Education/College Student Personnel from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale in 1972, an M.F.A. in Theatre from Western Illinois University in 1991, and a B.A. in Social Science from the State University of New York-College at Potsdam in 1970.

 

Dr. Evans has edited, co-edited, and co-authored several books including Encouraging the Development of Women (1985), Beyond Tolerance: Gays, Lesbians and Bisexuals on Campus (with Vernon Wall, 1991), The State of the Art of Professional Preparation and Practice: Another Look (with Christine Phelps Tobin, 1998), Student Development in College: Theory, Research, and Practice (with Deanna Forney and Florence Guido-DiBrito, 1998), Toward Acceptance: Sexual Orientation Issues on College Campuses (with Vernon Wall, 2000), Foundations of Student Affairs Practice: How Philosophy, Theory, and Research Strengthen Educational Outcomes (with Florence Hamrick and John Schuh, 2002), and Increasing Students' Development of Social Justice Attitudes and Actions (with Robert Reason, Ellen Broido, and Tracy Davis, 2005). She is currently working on a second edition of Student Development in College (with Deanna Forney and Florence Guido-DiBrito). She also has numerous journal articles and book chapters to her credit and has presented over 100 programs and papers at professional association meetings. She was named an Annuit Coeptis Senior Professional by ACPA-College Student Educators International in 1989, an ACPA Senior Scholar in 1998, and a Diamond Honoree by the Educational Leadership Foundation of ACPA in 2002. In recognition of her scholarly work, Dr. Evans was awarded the Contribution to Knowledge Award in 1998 by ACPA.

 

Her research interests include gay, lesbian, and bisexual issues, issues facing students with disabilities, social justice, the impact of the campus environment on students, and student development. She is currently involved in several research projects including examinations of: (1) social integration of students with disabilities, (2) the impact of multicultural leadership training on students'attitudes about and involvement in social justice activities, (3) LGBT Safe Zone programs, and (4) factors influencing LGB students'transition to college. In 2005, Dr. Evans was the recipient of the Superior Research Medallion by the College of Education at Iowa State University.

 

Dr. Evans has taught a wide range of courses in higher education, student affairs, and counseling. In 2006-07, she is teaching Student Development Theory I, College Environments and Cultures, Student Development Theory II, and the master's level Capstone Seminar. She has also taught Social Justice Theory and Practice, Sexual Orientation Issues in Higher Education, Research Designs, College Teaching, and Diversity in Higher Education at Iowa State. Dr. Evans was awarded the Superior Teaching Medallion by the College of Education at Iowa State University in 2002. In 2003, she received the Outstanding Graduate Preparation Faculty Award from the Standing Committee for Graduate Students and New Professionals of ACPA and the Wise Woman Award from the ACPA Standing Committee for Women.

 

Dr. Evans has an extensive record of service to student affairs professional associations. She served as President of ACPA in 2001-02 and was a member of the ACPA Executive Committee from 2000-2003. She is a past editor of ACPA Books and Media and a past member of the ACPA Generation and Dissemination of Knowledge Core Council. She served on the search committee for the current ACPA Executive Director and was an ACPA representative to the task force that prepared a new policy statement for the student affairs field, entitled Learning Reconsidered: An Action Agenda. Dr. Evans was the first coordinator of the Emerging Scholar program for ACPA and served for 12 years on the Editorial Board of the Journal of College Student Development. She is currently a member of the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Gay and Lesbian Issues in Education and Oracle-The Research Journal of the Association of Fraternity Advisors .

 

Dr. Evans is committed to service to her own university community, particularly with regard to issues of social justice, diversity, and enhancing the campus climate. She served for seven years on the Advisory Board for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Student Services and is currently the advisor for the Alliance for Disability Awareness. Previously she served as Curriculum Committee chair for ELPS and as a member of the College of Education Curriculum Committee. In these positions she was directly responsible for revisions of the Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and the master's program in student affairs.
