Biographical Statement

Florence A. Hamrick received the Ph.D. in Higher Education from Indiana University in 1996, the M.A. in College Student Personnel from Ohio State University in 1983, and the B.A. in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1981. Dr. Hamrick came to Iowa State University in January 1996 as Assistant Professor of Higher Education and was tenured and promoted to Associate Professor in April 2002. Prior to beginning her Ph.D. work at Indiana University, she was Associate Director of Placement and Career Services at Wichita State University. Dr. Hamrick is Editor of the Journal of College Student Development, the leading research journal focusing on college students and the official journal of ACPA: College Student Educators International. She served as a member of the JCSD Editorial Board from 1993-2003. From November 2003-February 2004, Dr. Hamrick was a Visiting Scholar at Thammasat University in Bangkok, Thailand, where she was affiliated with the Ph.D. Program in Integrated Sciences and the Thammasat University Research and Consultancy Institute.

 

Dr. Hamrick has taught Qualitative Research Methodology, Advanced Qualitative Research Methodology, the Higher Education Dissertation Seminar, Student Development Theory and Research, Introduction to Educational Research, and the master's Capstone Seminar. She has also co-taught an intermediate statistics course and an introductory higher education course. Dr. Hamrick was named a 2005 ISU Wakonse Fellow in recognition of her dedication to effective teaching. Dr. Hamrick is active in a number of professional organizations including the ACPA, the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE), the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA), the American Educational Research Association, Division J (AERA), and the Iowa Educational Research and Evaluation Association (IEREA). Dr. Hamrick was 2004 President of IEREA, and she served as IEREA Conference Co-chair in 2003.

 

Dr. Hamrick's scholarly interests center on higher education access, success, and equity of members of non-dominant populations; as well as professionalism and ethics. Currently, she is co-PI on the National Science Foundation funded ISU ADVANCE program to investigate the effectiveness of a multilevel collaborative effort to produce institutional transformation that results in the full participation of women faculty in science, technology, engineering and math fields in the university.

 

Dr. Hamrick is the author or co-author of two books, eight book or monograph chapters, 21 refereed journal articles, and 19 invited publications. Dr. Hamrick has presented or co-presented four conference keynote or plenary addresses, 38 invited lectures (seven in Thailand), 39 refereed sessions at national conferences, and 11 sessions at state or regional conferences. She was a Fellow at the NCES Advanced Studies Seminar (1993) and the AERA Institutes on Statistical Analysis for Education Policy (1993 and 1996). Dr. Hamrick was named an ACPA "Emerging Scholar" in 2001 and an ACPA Diamond Honoree in 2007. In 2004, she received the Robert Shaffer Distinguished Alumni Award from Indiana University's Higher Education and Student Affairs Program.
