Master's Program Course Requirements (Student Affairs Emphasis)

The following courses are required for the master's degree program in Higher Education with an emphasis in Student Affairs:

Foundational Studies (6 cr.)
HgEd 504 Higher Education in the United States (3 cr.)
HgEd 574 Student Affairs Practice in Higher Education (3 cr.)

Professional Studies (24 cr.)
Student Development Theory
Hg Ed 576 Student Development in Higher Education (3 cr.)
Hg Ed 676 Student Development Theory II (3 cr.)

Student Characteristics and Effects of College on Students
Hg Ed 578 Students in American Higher Education (3 cr.)
Hg Ed 577 Campus Environments and Cultures (3 cr.)

Individual and Group Interventions
Hg Ed 579 Counseling and Group Dynamics in Post-secondary Settings (3 cr.)

Organization and Administration of Student Affairs
Hg Ed 575 Organization and Administration of Student Affairs (3 cr.)

Assessment, Evaluation, and Research
Res Ev 550 Educational Research (3 cr.)
Hg Ed 597 Assessment and Evaluation in Student Affairs (3 cr.)

Supervised Practice (3 cr.)
Hg Ed 591 Supervised Field Experience and Seminar (3 cr.)
(In addition, students with minimal experience in Higher Education are encouraged to seek a summer internship to augment their experience base in the field.)

Integrative Coursework (3 cr.)
Hg Ed 598 Capstone Seminar (3 cr.)

Elective (3 cr.)
Any graduate course within or outside the Higher Education program may be used to fulfill this requirement. In consultation with their major professor, students are encouraged to identify a course that will provide additional background to assist them in achieving their professional goals.

M.S. degree requirements differ in the following ways from the M.Ed. requirements outlined above:

1) ResEv 552 Educational Statistics (3 cr.) or HPC 580 Qualitative Research Methods (3 cr.) replaces the elective (3 cr.).
2) HgED 598 Capstone Seminar (3 cr.) is replaced by HgEd 699 Thesis (6 cr.)

(M.Ed. = 39 credits; M.S. = 42 credits)
