The Educational Leadership Ph.D Seminar

The Educational Leadership Ph.D Seminar (4 cr.)

In prior years, each new Ph. D. cohort has been involved in an orientation early in the first semester and then in thematic seminars during the first year. Based on feedback from participants, the format for this portion of the Ph. D. Core experience is being revised this year. Instead of six stand-alone seminars over three semesters, each taught by different faculty, students will participate in a two-credit orientation course each of the first two semesters in the program. Although divided into two semesters, the two courses are intended to be one overall experience and must be completed the first year of the Ph. D. program. During this first year of the revised format, seminar numbers will be used, and ELPS Records Analyst Judy Weiland will enroll students in the appropriate seminars.

The overall intended purposes of the courses are to:

  • Help students develop an "education-across-the lifespan" perspective by exploring issues related to seamless transitions for learners as they progress through education systems;
  • Create opportunities for a group of students at relatively the same stage in their doctoral work to develop community via interaction and shared experiences: and
  • Facilitate orientation to the doctoral program and its requirements.

In addition, this format will support students meeting the procedural requirements of the program and will provide them the opportunity to meet and interact with many faculty members.
