Master's Program Course Requirements

The following courses are required for the master's degree program in Higher Education with an emphasis in Student Affairs/Generalist:


Foundational and Organizational Studies in Student Affairs (9 cr.)

  1. Hg Ed 504 Higher Education in the United States (3 cr.)
  2. Hg Ed 574 Student Affairs Practice in Higher Education (3 cr.)
  3. Hg Ed 575 Organization and Administration of Student Affairs (3 cr.)

Theoretical Perspectives (6 cr.)

  1. Hg Ed 576 Student Development Theory I (3 cr.)
  2. Hg Ed 676 Student Development Theory II (3 cr.)

Student Characteristics and Effects of College on Students (9 cr.)

  1. Hg Ed 577 Campus Environments and Cultures (3 cr.)
  2. Hg Ed 578 Students in American Higher Education (3 cr.)
  3. Hg Ed 579 Counseling and Group Dynamics (3 cr.)

Assessment, Evaluation, and Research (6 cr.)

  1. Res Ev 550 Educational Research (3 cr.)

Supervised Field Experience and Seminar (3 cr.)

(In addition, students with minimal experience in Higher Education are encouraged to seek a summer internship to augment their experience base in the field.)

M.S. degree requirements differ in the following ways from the M.Ed. requirements outlined above:

  1. ResEv 552 Educational Statistics (3 cr.) or Res Ev 580 Qualitative Research Methods (3 cr.) must be taken and the choice is dependent upon the type of thesis the student will write (e.g. qualitative or quantitative).
  2. HgED 598 Capstone Seminar (3 cr.) and HgED 590A Independent Study (3 cr.) are replaced by HgEd 699 Thesis (6 cr.)

(M.Ed. = 42 credits; M.S. = 42 credits)
